  • An Animal I Find Interesting-Sharks

Did you know that Sharks are ancient, cartilaginous fish with diverse species, known for replacing thousands of teeth, having a sixth sense for electricity (electroreception), and skin like sandpaper. They range from tiny to massive, inhabit all oceans, and are crucial for marine health, but face threats from humans despite their vital role as apex predators. Sharks are highly diverse cartilaginous fish that have inhabited the world’s oceans for over 450 million years, predating trees and surviving five mass extinctions. As of January 2026, there are more than 530 recognized species, ranging from the pocket-sized dwarf lantern shark to the whale shark, which can exceed 40 feet in length. Unlike most fish, sharks lack a bony skeleton, relying instead on flexible cartilage and large, oil-filled livers for buoyancy. They are renowned for their “sixth sense” provided by the ampullae of Lorenzini, which allow them to detect the faint electrical fields of prey. While often feared, only a small fraction of species are dangerous to humans; in fact, recent 2026 data shows that humans are a far greater threat, with overfishing placing approximately one-third of all shark and ray species at risk of extinction.
